Waterproofing problems are a very expensive and ongoing issue that besets all buildings whether commercial or domestic. All roofs are subject to thermal shock (expansion and contraction) that takes place daily. Thermal shock not only weakens existing waterproofing membranes but also puts severe strain on the roof fastenings. Once the water has penetrated through the substrate it can settle into the roofing timbers, insulation, ceiling and even electrical wiring, creating safety concerns and causing long-term and expensive damage. The telltale signs of water ingress are stains growing across the ceiling and water running down inside walls. These signs might not seem too serious in themselves, but the dangers go beyond aesthetic worries. The damage that a leaky roof can cause can be dramatic if not treated in its early stages. Another side effect, if water issues are not treated early, is mould which can produce airborne bacteria causing sever health problems. All the above issues are a major cost of monitoring and repair which adequate waterproofing can stem.
